DISNEY'S HALLOWEENTIME

Disneyland Park
Anaheim, CA
E-Mail:
Web Pages: Haunted Mansion Webpage

HalloweenTime Webpage

2007 DATES: September 21 to October 31

TICKETS: Single-day park admission price is $46 for children under ten, $56 for older children and adults.

PARKING: $9 for automobiles; $11 for oversized vehicles, motor homes, and tractors without trailers; $16 for buses and tractors with trailers.

DISCOUNTS: various muti-park and multi-day combination offers (if you also want to visit Disney's California Adventure, where you can "enjoy" the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror).

FEATURES: It's becoming an annual tradition: For the Halloween season, Disneyland transforms itself into a haunted theme park (family-friendly, of course), with the traditional Disney characters attired in costumes to show the spirit of the season. All the usual Disney rides and attractions are open, but many with an extra special scary spin. Jack O'Lanterns depict Mickey Mouse and his friends, and candy corn spells out "California" in 11-foot tall letters over the entyway to the Main Street Pumpkin Festival. Seasonal food is available in the form of Gingerbrad Pumpkin Cooies, Cream Topped Pumpkin Muffins, and Pumpkin King Mousse Tarts.

GHOSTLY GOINGS-ON: Disneyland offers several spine-tingling thrills that are not to scary for even young children.

  • Golden Scream with Disney Villains gives you a chance to meet and greet the famous Disney villains in the Golden Screams Theatre at Disney's California Adventure Park, "the lair for those who scare." (Not listed for 2007)
  • Woody's Halloween Roundup offers music, spooky tales, seasonal crafts, and a petting zoon, hosted by characters from TOY STORY.  (Back for 2007)
  • Haunted Mansion Holiday sees the famous Haunted Mansion, open year-round, get an extra-special face lift for the October season, taking on the appearance of Halloween Town from A NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. (Back for 2007)
  • Twilight Zone Tower of Terror subjects you to a terrifying free-fall as you enter the Hollywood Tower Hotel. With a sculpted bats guarding the entry gates, there's no telling if you will be able to find a way out. (Back for 2007)

DRAWBACKS: This is basically a Halloween opportunity for parents with children who don't want to be too frightened. Although fun, the Haunted Mansion is not really scary; the Tower of Terror may be terrifying, but it is basically a thrill ride, not a traditional Halloween attraction. So it's not exactly what most enthusiasts expect from a Halloween attraction. Still, you can console yourself with a trip on the Pirates of the Caribbean.

FEARPLEX

Formally Scareplex at the L.A. County Fair
1101 W. McKinley Avenue
Pomona, CA 91765
Phone: 949-660-1988
Website: www.fearplex.com

2007 DATES: October 12-13, 19-20, 26-28, 30-31.

HOURS: 7:00 to 10:00pm on weekdays, 7:00 to midnight on Fridays, Saturdays, and Halloween night

CHILDREN'S MATINEES: October 20-21 & 27-28 from noon till 4:00pm

TICKETS: $12.50 per person; $18.50 for VIP pass; $8.50 for children's matinees. Tix are available at the website.

PARKING: lots of parking for the fairgrounds, approximately $10.

DISCOUNT: The website is offering a "Southern California Haunts Tour" discount, which includes admissions for Fearplex, Spooky House, Old Town Haunt, and Seaside Haunt. Tickets may be used once at each location during the 2007 Halloween season; if you visit all the haunts, you receive a free Southern California Haunts Survivor t-shirt.

FEATURES: Fearplex is located on the grounds that host the Los Angeles Country Fair. Unlike the old Scareplex (which was brought to you by Shipwreck Productions, the people behind the fine Queen Mary Terror Fest), Fearplex is associated with the people behind the long-running Spooky House and its spin-offs, Seaside Haunt and Old Town Haunt.

HISTORY: Scareplex made its debut in 2004 to mediocre response. After returning in 2005, the haunt did not return for the 2006 season. Fearplex appears to be an all new haunt, taking advantage of the L.A. County Fairplex location, but details on its website are scarce.

HAUNTED MANOR: The annual L.A. County Fair, which runs from September to October (except Mondays and Tuesdays) used to offer "Scare at the Fair," a single walk-through haunted house maze. Now that the old Scareplex Halloween haunt has been replaced by Fearplex, Scare at the Fair has been replaced by the "Haunted Manor." FAIR HOURS: 11:00am - 10:00pm Wednesday through Thursday; 11:00am - midnight on Friday; 10:00 - midnight on Saturday; 10:00am to 10:00pm on Sunday.

HOLLYWOOD HALLOWEEN STREET FAIR

Hollywood Boulevard
Hollywood, CA 90068

DATES: October 31

HOURS: Dusk to 10:00pm (some stores will be open later)

PRICE: Free

INFORMATION: This is a milder, more kid-friendly, and somewhat smaller version of the famous West Hollywood Street carnival. Basically, the streets are closed off to automobile traffic, and a sort of amatuer parade of costumed individuals makes their way down the boulevard. Even if you do not want to dress you, you will enjoy the sights on display, and this is a good opportunity to visit the museums and other attractions in the area.

NOTE: For 2006, the city requested that no one bring silly string (presumably because it makes a mess). We assume the same rule will be in effect for 2007.

HOLLYWOOD HELL HOUSE

385 La Cienaga Boulevard
West Hollywood, CA 90048
Phone: 323-960-7822
Website: HollywoodHellHouse.Com

Read Hollywood Gothique's review of the 2007 Hell House.

2007 DATES: Thursdays-Saturdays, October 4-6, 11-13, 18-20, 25-27

HOURS: runs every fifteen minutes, first tour starting at 8:45pm, last tour starting at 10:45pm

TICKETS: $22.50 in advance, $25 at the door

FEATURES: This is not your typical haunt. It is based on a presentation designed to teach "young people that they can go to hell for abortion, adultery, homosexuality, drinking, and other things unless they repent and end the behavior." Keenan Roberts, who has been presenting the real Hell House since 1992, sells Hell House Outreach kits to other churches, including a 263-page manual - which is the basis for the West Hollywood version. It goes without that the West Hollywood presentation plays the material for laughs.

OTHER INFO: The theatre offers concessions. After you have walked thorugh the haunt you are invited to hang out for a dance party with DJ Davey Save and the young groupers and the Snake Handlers, with "bands, dancing, and praising till midnight."

TRIVIA: The original Hell House was the subject of an excellent documentary film, which is definitely worth checking out. After you have seen it, you will definitely be interested in attending the haunt in person.

L.A. COUNTY SCAREPLEX

Fairplex, home of the L.A. County Fair
1101 W. McKinley Avenue
Pomona, CA 91765
Phone: 949-660-1988
Website: www.scareplex.com

DATES & HOURS: NO LONGER IN OPERATION. A NEW COMPANY HAS TAKEN OVER THE HAUNT AND RE-NAMED IT "FEARPLEX" (SEE LISTING ABOVE).

TICKETS: formerly $20 per person.

DISCOUNTS: The official website had a Discounts page, but you needed to check back often in hope of finding an actual discount late in the season.

HISTORY: Scareplex was produced by Shipwreck Productions, the people behind the fine Queen Mary Terror Fest. Scarplex made its debut in 2004 to mediocre response; some haunt-goers complained that many of the props and settings were leftovers from the Queen Marry Terror Fest. After returning in 2005, the haunt skipped the 2006 season. In 2007, a new company took over, and the haunt was re-christened "Fearplex" (see listing above).

FEATURES: The Haunt featured an all-night dance party and four mazes: Reaper's Revenge, Voodoo Village, Massacre Mountain, and Mayhem Manor.

SCARE AT THE FAIR: Shipwreck Productions also presented "Scare at the Fair," a single walk-through haunted house maze, during the annual L.A. County Fair. Along with Scareplex, this, too, has been replaced by a new attraction, the Haunted Manor (see listing for "Fearplex" above).

Since proprietor Dr. Ronald Singer sold the enterpirse to new owners Denise Larson Kivett and Ralph Esacoff, the plan has been to expand the attraction to a year-round calendar that will allow for fund-raising, film production, and tours during the Halloween season. In 2006, Molar Manor moved from Santa Clarita to Canyon Country, expanding to a new, larger facility.

THOUSAND OAKS HAUNTED HOUSE

Janns Market Place
215 North Moorpark Road
Thousand Oaks, CA 91360
Phone: 805-208-3706
Website: www.thousandoakshaunt.com

DATES & HOURS: NONE FOR 2007.

TICKETS: $10 for one maze, $16 for both mazes, $20 for VIP pass (less waiting)

PARKING: Free

DISCOUNTS:

FAMILY FRIENDLY MATINEES: noon to 4:00pm on Saturdays & Sundays

FEATURES: Besides the haunt itself, there are booths to buy kettle corn and souvenirs; plus, there is a rock-climbing wall and a full-sized rhinocerous prop with a movable head (don't ask us why). As for the haunt itself, there are three attractions: two for adults at night and one for kids in the afternoon:

  • Circus of Screams: According to the official website, a "Circus of Screams" visited Thousand Oaks decades ago, and many strange things happened; nothing was ever proven, and the circus departed. But many say that the spirits of the evil clowns still haunt the area.
  • Thousand Oaks Haunted House: an obscure filmmaker, whose movies were so sick and twisted that they were never released, mysteriously disappeared when the authorities broke in on him, but his work lives on.
  • Thousand Ghosts 3D Matinee: This less frightening attraction is recommend for children under 13 (and their parents with faint hearts)

DRAWBACKS: This haunt was set up in a temporary structure (a large tent inside a gated area) in a parking lot; consequently, the decorations and mechanical effects are not as elaborate as those seen in some permanent facilities.

HISTORY: After making its debut in 2005, the haunt's official website went down in August 2006, and the haunt sat out that Halloween. As of August 2007, a redesigned website was up and running, but the information was leftover from 2005, with no indication of future updates. Apparently, this haunt was a one-year wonder.

UNIVERSAL'S HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS

WEST HOLLYWOOD HALLOWEEN COSTUME CARNAVAL

Santa Monica Boulevard, between Doheny & La Cienaga
West Hollywood, CA 90069
Phone: (310) 289-2525
Websites: www.visitwesthollywood.com

DATES: October 31

HOURS: 6:00PM till midnight (and beyond...?)

PRICE: Free

PARKING: Difficult (unless you come way early). With Santa Monica blocked off to automobiles, the traffic clogs the other major street arteries, making it difficult to get close to the event. Best bet is to part a few blocks away and walk.

INFORMATION: This parade of costumed adults began years ago as a primarily gay event, featuring the local residents, but it's gradually grown into a major attraction that draws outsiders eager to see what the fuss is all about. The result is a sort of carnival-freakshow that diverges somewhat from more traditional Halloween festivals -- i.e., you will see far more drag queens than skeletons and monsters. (Some of the more clever costumes combine both concepts, such as "Bobbi" the homicidal transvestite alter ego of Michael Caine in DRESSED TO KILL.) The elaborate nature of many of the home-made costumes goes far beyond impressive into the realm of the totally awesome.
